What "inspired by" really means

An inspired-by perfume is an original fragrance, made and sold under its own brand name, whose scent profile is designed to resemble a well-known release. It is not fake designer perfume. It does not use the designer's bottle, logo or name on the label. A good inspired-by scent recreates the character of the original - the same broad family, similar key notes, a comparable vibe - using the perfumer's own formula.

Dupe, clone, impression, alternative - is there a difference?

• Dupe / clone: casual words for a close-smelling alternative. "Clone" usually implies a very close match.
• Impression: industry term - the house's interpretation of a famous scent.
• Alternative: a softer word, often used when the scent is in the same style rather than a near-identical match.

In practice these are marketing labels for the same concept. What matters is how close it smells and how long it lasts.

Are inspired-by perfumes legal?

Yes. A scent itself cannot be copyrighted or patented in the UK, the EU or the US. What is protected is the brand's name, logo and packaging (trade marks). That is why reputable inspired-by houses never copy the bottle or claim to be the designer - they sell the scent under their own identity and, at most, note which fragrance it is "inspired by" for reference.
